She hadn’t been suffering from a decline due to old age or sudden illness. She was being systematically poisoned and robbed by the very people who had stood at the grave with tearless eyes.
Beneath the financial ledgers lay an audio recorder. My fingers trembled as I pressed the play button.
The small speaker hissed with static before my mother’s calm, steady voice filled the concrete room. Hearing her voice so clear and composed made my heart leap into my chest.
“If you are listening to this, my sweet girl, then the plan was set into motion,” she said, her tone devoid of the frailty she had displayed over the past few months. “The man who gave you this key was paid to ensure you received it without attracting attention. Do not mourn for me today, because the body in that box does not belong to me. In fact, there is no body at all.”
I leaned against the desk, my hands clutching the wooden edge as her words washed over me.
“For six months,” her recorded voice continued, “I suspected Franklin was tampering with my medication and falsifying my accounts with Victor’s help. When I confirmed it, I realized that attempting to confront them directly would only put you and me in immediate physical danger. They were desperate, and desperate men make reckless decisions. With the help of a trusted old colleague from the medical examiner’s office, we orchestrated a controlled exit. The stroke was faked. The transfer to the private facility was arranged under strict privacy protocols. The coffin being buried today is weighted with sand bags and sealed tight.”
She paused, the sound of a soft breath coming through the speaker.
“You must be wondering why I asked you to come home alone,” she continued. “Inside the safe behind this desk, you will find the master code to the house security system, along with a secondary recorder. Franklin and Victor believe that with my passing, the estate transfers automatically into a temporary trust that Franklin controls. They will be at the main house tonight, searching my study for the physical deeds and original will that they failed to find while I was hospitalized. They think the path is clear.”
The recording fell silent for a moment before her final instructions came through.
“I need you to be strong, my darling. Go to the house. Use the side entrance behind the rose garden. Do not turn on any lights. Connect the secondary drive in the safe to the central router in the basement. It will transmit the real-time financial evidence directly to the federal authorities who are already monitoring the situation. But you must do this before midnight, before Franklin attempts to sign the emergency conservatorship documents.”
The recording clicked off, leaving only the sound of my own ragged breathing in the narrow room.
