Glen was standing near the head table, holding a glass of water and talking to the police chief. As his eyes drifted toward the entrance and landed on me, his smile froze instantly. His face drained of all color. He stared at the dress, his gaze locking onto the exact panel of fabric where the secret pocket had been stitched closed for half a decade. He knew immediately what that dress represented.
I walked steadily across the polished marble floor toward the chief of police, keeping my posture straight and my chin up, just as my father had instructed in his final words. Glen took a slow step backward, looking frantically around the room, but two plainclothes officers from the state authority were already standing near the side exits.
I stopped directly in front of the chief and Glen. I didn’t raise my voice or make a scene. I simply looked Glen dead in the eye and said quietly that my father’s memory was finally clear, and that the truth had finally stepped into the light.
The chief looked confused at first, but within moments, two state investigators approached the table, presenting Glen with an official warrant based on the recovered digital files from the workbench trophy. The room fell into complete, stunned silence as Glen was escorted out of the ballroom without a word, his hands secured behind his back.
I turned around and walked out of the hotel into the cool evening air, feeling a profound weight lift from my shoulders. For five long years, a shadow had hung over our lives, but tonight, justice had finally prevailed. I pulled my wrap around my shoulders, held my dad’s badge close to my heart, and headed off to prom, knowing that my father was finally resting in peace.
