Michael stood frozen, looking at the ring in his hand, then at the scattered papers, and finally at me. The room around us had gone almost entirely quiet now. The music seemed out of place. Several prominent board members were staring directly at him with expressions of disgust and disapproval. His professional reputation, his financial venture, and his double life had all shattered in less than ten minutes.

“Allison, please,” he whispered, looking defeated, small, and utterly pathetic. “We can talk about this. We can fix this.”

I looked at him—really looked at him—and realized that the man I had loved for seven years didn’t exist. He was just a hollow shell built on lies, charisma, and borrowed money.

“There’s nothing left to fix, Michael,” I said calmly. “My lawyer will contact yours in the morning. Keep the ring. You’re going to need it to pay your legal fees.”

I turned my back on him and walked out of the Plaza Hotel into the cool Manhattan air. For the first time in three days, I took a deep, full breath. My new job was starting on Monday, my finances were secured, and my future was finally entirely my own.
