Part 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

The loud blare of the security alarm suddenly cut out, leaving a ringing silence in the brick-lined corridor.

Barnaby paused his chewing, his giant white ears twitching as a strange sound echoed from the far end of the sanctuary entrance.

It wasn’t the sound of arriving police or animal control vehicles; it was the sound of a heavy wooden crate scraping against the concrete floor.

The head veterinarian, Dr. Aris, walked into the hallway carrying a small, silver transport box lined with blue steel reinforced latches.

Barnaby lowered his handful of walnuts, his pink eyes narrowing as he leaned forward over the yellow iron bars of his climbing frame.

He knew that silver box; it was the exact container used whenever a new rescue resident arrived at the facility.

Dr. Aris didn’t look angry about the breach, nor did he hold a tranquilizer rifle; instead, he wore a gentle, knowing smile on his tired face.

He walked past the amazed staff members and set the silver box down right in front of Barnaby’s locked enclosure door.

Barnaby let out a soft, curious grumble, shifting his massive white frame down the rusty bars to get a closer look at the mysterious container.

The lock on the silver box clicked open, and the side panel slid down smoothly to reveal its occupant.

Sitting inside was not a competitor, nor was it a threat; it was a tiny, shivering white gorilla infant, no bigger than a football, with identical pale fur and bright pink skin.

The tiny creature looked around the scary, loud environment, its little hands trembling as it clutched a frayed blue blanket.

Barnaby’s smug, mischievous expression melted away instantly, replaced by a look of profound, soft shock that transformed his entire face.

The giant titan who had just outsmarted an entire team of human guards suddenly looked completely vulnerable.

He dropped the remaining honeyed walnuts onto the floor, completely forgetting about the sweet treat he had spent months planning to steal.

He reached one massive, scarred white hand through the bars of his cage, lowering it gently to the ground like an anchor of safety.

The tiny baby gorilla blinked its wide pink eyes, smelled the familiar scent of its own rare kin, and crawled slowly out of the silver box toward the huge hand.

It climbed right into Barnaby’s massive palm, fitting perfectly within the center of his hand like a small piece of cotton ball.

Barnaby lifted the infant up toward his chest with extreme care, holding his breath as if he were afraid the slightest breeze might break the tiny creature.

He brought the baby close to his face, resting his pink nose against the baby’s tiny forehead, letting out a soft, soothing hum that filled the room.
