“You can’t tell me what to do in my own—”

“Three steps, Calvin,” I interrupted, my tone laced with an absolute authority that made his instincts betray his arrogance.

His mouth opened to argue, but the sheer gravity of my command stopped him. His posture collapsed slightly. Slowly, awkwardly, he backed up until his chair hit the edge of the kitchen table. He sat down heavily, his hands resting nervously on the laminate surface.

“Who are you?” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, searching my face as if looking for a mask he could tear off. “You’re just… you’re just a bureaucrat.”

I pulled my military credential wallet from the interior pocket of my rain jacket. I didn’t flash it dramatically; I simply laid it flat on the table in front of him, flipping it open to reveal the gold-embedded identification card, the Department of Defense seal, and the rank clearly stamped beneath my photo: Colonel, United States Army Special Forces.

Calvin stared at the card. He blinked, reading the text once, twice, three times. His head snapped up to look at me, total disbelief fighting against the reality sitting right in front of him.

“You’re… a Colonel?” he stammered.

“I command an operational group,” I replied, folding the wallet and putting it back into my jacket. “Which means I have access to federal investigative resources, forensic accounting teams, and legal assets that you cannot begin to comprehend. What you’ve done here isn’t just domestic abuse and fraud, Calvin. You used forged documents across state lines to move assets into shell corporations. That makes it a federal wire fraud offense.”

“I… I can explain the transfers,” he blurted out, his posture shrinking further into the chair. The confident, domineering husband had vanished, replaced by a terrified man realizing he had backed the wrong person into a corner. “It was an investment opportunity. I was going to pay it all back.”

“You’re not going to pay anything back to us,” I said, picking up the envelope and securing it inside my coat. “You are going to sit in this chair while my mother packs the rest of her essential belongings. Tomorrow morning, my legal team will file for a full protective order, freeze all joint accounts, and hand this notebook over to the state prosecutor’s office.”
