“Clara, please!” my mother cried out, her composure completely shattering as an officer stepped forward with handcuffs. “We’re your family! You can’t do this to us! What will people say?”

“You stopped being my family the moment you decided my life’s security was disposable,” I said softly.

Detective Miller nodded to his officers. Within minutes, my father, mother, and sister were escorted out of the building in handcuffs, silent and humiliated as neighbors gathered in the hallway to watch the commotion.

When I finally walked back into my apartment an hour later, the room was silent once again. I walked over to the Steinway piano, ran my fingers over the smooth ivory keys, and looked out over the Boston skyline. For the first time in my life, the weight of trying to earn their love was gone, replaced by the unbreakable peace of knowing I had finally protected myself.
