Derek stepped back from the table, looking at Victoria as if he were seeing her for the very first time. The smug, judgmental attitude he had held all afternoon vanished completely. “Victoria… is this true? Is the money gone?”

Victoria didn’t answer. She collapsed back into her chair, staring at the polished dining table that had, only moments ago, felt like the site of her greatest victory.

I picked up my phone, my keys, and my coat from the back of the chair. The room was heavy with shock, but for the first time in years, the weight was off my shoulders. I looked at my family—at the parents who had automatically believed I was the weak one, and the sister who thought power was something you could simply take from others.

“The office keys are on the console by the door, Victoria,” I said calmly, stepping around the agents toward the hallway. “It’s all under your management now. Good luck.”

I walked out the front door into the crisp afternoon air, leaving the quiet house behind me as the real work of accountability finally began.
