Vance reviewed the documents in absolute silence for nearly twenty minutes, adjusting his glasses twice. When he finally looked up, his expression was solemn, almost reverent. He explained that what Lucas had prepared was a massive transfer of assets disguised as a routine estate planning update. If Margot signed the final closing documents—the ones Lucas had left marked with little yellow adhesive tabs on his desk—she would effectively surrender all rights to the marital assets, agree to a silent postnuptial asset division, and assign her literary copyrights to his management company permanently.
The notary was scheduled to arrive at their home on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Lucas had framed it as a simple formality, a routine update to ensure they were protected against property taxes as they grew older.
When Saturday arrived, the atmosphere in the house was heavy with an artificial lightness. Lucas was in an exceptionally good mood, humming a low tune as he made freshly ground espresso. He brought a cup to Margot where she sat in the living room, surrounded by sunlight. He set a thick leather folder on the coffee table between them, along with a pen.
A knock at the door heralded the arrival of Mr. Henderson, the mobile notary Lucas had hired. He was a polite, hurried young man who clearly assumed this was just another affluent couple handling standard estate matters. Lucas guided him into the living room, gesturing toward the coffee table with a casual flourish.
Lucas sat down next to Margot, placing a gentle hand over hers. He opened the folder to the flagged pages, pointing to the yellow tags. He handed her the pen, his voice dripping with that familiar, soothing tone he used when explaining complex legal matters to a child.
Margot looked down at the paper. There was the blank line. Just above it was the clause that would strip her of everything she had ever built, earned, or inherited.
She looked up at Lucas. His eyes were wide, eager, holding a mask of gentle concern that almost looked convincing.
