PART 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
It wasn’t Samson dropping down from the canopy.
It was little Pip, a tiny two-year-old orphan chimp who had been rescued by the sanctuary team only three months prior.
Pip was fragile, skinny, and terrified of the bigger chimps who constantly shoved him away during feeding times.
Pip landed softly on the dusty trail, his large brown eyes staring in absolute shock at Barnaby’s outrageous appearance. 🥺
Barnaby stood there, frozen mid-stride, looking like a terrifying dark monster with a giant green visor jammed into his face and dripping red flesh in both hands.
Little Pip let out a small, trembling squeak and instinctively curled into a tiny ball on the dirt path, covering his head with his thin arms.
He thought Barnaby was going to attack him or scream at him for being in the way.
Barnaby looked down at the tiny shivering creature.
Through the green rind wedged tight in his teeth, Barnaby let out a muffled, gentle grunt—the softest sound his throat could produce.
He slowly lowered his heavy body, bending his knees so he wouldn’t loom over the little orphan like a giant.
Barnaby stared at the slice in his right hand.
It was the juiciest piece, loaded with sweet red nectar and full of energy.
Barnaby had risked his entire standing in the troop for this moment.
He had outsmarted Ranger Steve, evaded Samson, and walked like a human across an open trail just to satisfy his own deep craving.
If he gave away a single piece now, the risk he took would be halved.
He looked back over his shoulder.
The deep, furious roars of Samson were echoing through the trees—the alpha had finally discovered the empty truck bed and was charging down the path.
Time was running out.
Barnaby took a deep breath through his nose.
He gently reached down with his right hand and placed the largest, sweetest slice of watermelon directly into little Pip’s tiny lap. 🍉
Pip uncurled his arms slowly, looking down at the massive red treasure sitting on his knees.
The little chimp looked up at Barnaby with eyes full of wonder, confusion, and overwhelming gratitude.
Pip had never held an entire slice of watermelon in his entire life; he had only ever eaten the discarded rinds left behind by others.
Barnaby gave Pip a firm, reassuring nod.
Then, with his left hand still holding his second slice and the third rind still locked firmly between his jaws, Barnaby reached out his feet.
