I hurried down the stairs, pulling the tape carefully off his mouth. He gasped for air, coughing severely.
“They took it… they took everything,” David stammered, his voice broken and frantic, tears streaking through the dirt on his face. “Caroline… she wasn’t… she wasn’t a secretary.”
“What are you talking about?” I demanded, my hands hovering in shock.
“She was a professional scammer,” David wept, slumped against the pillar. “She pitched a high-yield investment scheme months ago. I fell for it… all of it. I moved all our savings, our house deed, the business accounts into her offshore network yesterday. She was supposed to meet me here this afternoon to finalize the transfer paperwork before we… before I left.”
He swallowed hard, looking up at me with profound shame. “When I couldn’t leave the house this morning because of… because I was sick… she got impatient. She came here expecting me to be ready with the final authorization codes. When she realized I was incapacitated upstairs, she brought two men in with her. They searched the house, found my hidden safe in the office, forced me to give up the digital master keys, tied me up, and cleared out every cent we had.”
I stood in the dim light of the basement, completely speechless. The petty laxative prank I had pulled to embarrass a cheating husband had unwittingly trapped him in the house just long enough to expose a massive, calculated financial betrayal that would have left me completely ruined without my knowledge. Had he left on time as planned, he would have boarded a flight, handed over the final codes in a distant country, and I would have woken up the next morning to discover my life dismantled without a single clue as to where he went.
Because he was stuck in the bathroom, the thieves had been forced to come directly to him, leaving a trail of evidence, bank documents, and local surveillance footage behind.
