Part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
A sudden, sharp breeze blew through the open-air top of the pavilion, sending a dry maple leaf swirling into the enclosure.
The leaf landed directly on top of the shiny bubblegum wrapper, hiding it completely from view and breaking the spell.
Leo blinked in surprise, looking around to see where his precious treasure had vanished in the cluttered straw.
Barnaby recognized his chance, moving his giant arm with a speed that didn’t seem possible for a creature of his massive size.
His dark fingers swept over the straw, scooping up the leaf, the gum, and a handful of dirt in one smooth motion.
He tucked the prize deep into his thick palm, returning to his stone-faced profile before anyone in the crowd could even blink.
Leo looked back up at the gorilla’s face, his eyes wide with a mix of absolute disappointment and newfound respect.
He realized the giant animal hadn’t just ignored him; the big guy had totally outsmarted him in broad daylight.
The small boy lowered his hands from the glass, letting out a long sigh that fogged up the window one last time.
But instead of getting angry or crying like most kids his age, a slow grin started to spread across Leo’s face.
He looked at the monkey on his shirt, then looked back at the magnificent silverback sitting just two feet away.
Barnaby slowly opened his massive hand just a tiny crack, letting the boy see the edge of the shiny pink wrapper inside.
Then, with a subtle movement that only Leo could see, the giant gorilla gave a very quick, very deliberate wink. 😉
It wasn’t a sign of aggression or a display of wild animal dominance; it was a moment of pure, shared human-like intelligence.
Leo felt a warm wave of excitement wash over him as he realized he was part of a real secret bond with a jungle king.
He tapped the glass twice, a silent sign of respect to the master operator, and stepped back into the moving crowd.
His sister grabbed his arm, completely unaware that her little brother had just participated in a high-stakes standoff. “Come on, Leo, let’s go see the penguins,” she muttered, pulling him toward the exit.
