Chapter 4: The Final Stand
Mtumishi stood up, his strength slowly returning as the effects of the tranquilizer wore off. He handed the silver whistle to the older juvenile and pointed to the high branches of the ancient tree.
“Climb,” Mtumishi commanded with a sharp nod. “If they find this place, blow into it as hard as you can.”
The young gorilla nodded, grabbing the whistle and scrambling up the rough bark with practiced ease. Pendo followed close behind, hiding himself in the thick leafy canopy.
Mtumishi turned to face the path they had made through the brush. He could hear the snapping of twigs and the muffled curses of the three men. They were close.
He stepped out into a small clearing, letting himself be seen. He stood tall, his silver back catching the dappled sunlight.
“There he is!” the leader shouted, crashing through the bushes. “Don’t let him get away this time!”
The man raised the rifle, but before he could align his sight, Mtumishi let out a deafening, earth-shaking roar. He pounded his massive chest with both fists, the sound echoing through the valley like a drumbeat of war. 🥁
At the exact same moment, from high above in the canopy, a piercing, shrill whistle blasted through the air.
The poachers froze. The sound of the whistle was loud, continuous, and closer than they expected.
“Rangers!” the younger poacher panicked, dropping his rope. “They’re already here! Let’s go!”
“No, wait!” the leader yelled, but the sound of distant shouts from the reserve guards, alerted by the whistle, began to echo from the ridges above.
Realizing they were outnumbered and outmaneuvered, the three men turned and fled back toward the boundary line, their boots slipping in the mud as they ran for their lives.
Mtumishi watched them go, his chest still heaving but his heart finally slowing. He looked up into the branches, where two small faces peered down at him with awe and relief.
Slowly, the great silverback walked back to his favorite patch of wild daisies. He lay down on his side, tucked his heavy arm beneath his head, and closed his eyes. The valley was safe once more, and it was finally time for his nap. 🌼
