Rebuilding Together
Building a nest is an art form. It requires patience, strength, and a deep understanding of how the wind moves through the trees. For the next three hours, our little family worked in perfect harmony.
Balo and I scrambled up and down the trunks, gathering the sturdiest vines and the softest leaves we could find. Mom stayed in the forks of the great mahogany tree, weaving the materials together with practiced, effortless grace.
Every now and then, I would find a small, stray pink orchid growing on a low branch and bring it up to her. Each time, her eyes would light up, and she would tuck it into the outer walls of our new home.
By the time the golden sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and purple, the nest was complete. It was twice as large as the old one, sturdy enough to withstand the heaviest tropical storms, and decorated with tiny splashes of bright pink. 🌸
“It’s perfect,” I whispered, yawning loudly as the cool evening breeze began to stir.
Mom climbed into the center of the nest, testing its bounce. She grunted in satisfaction and gestured for us to join her.
Balo curled up on her left side, already half-asleep, his long arms wrapped around his stomach. I crawled into the space on her right, tucking my head under her chin.
She pulled a thick blanket of soft leaves over us, sealing out the damp night air. As the jungle came alive with the nighttime chorus of frogs and insects, I felt completely safe. I knew that no matter how many nests we broke, or how many times we slipped, we would always find a way to rebuild together. 🏠
