Back to the Safety of the Deep Forest

Seeing their leader covered in fruit juice and losing his hat seemed to break the humans’ spirit. They realized that in this vertical world of wood and leaf, they were completely outmatched.

“Retreat! Fall back to the vehicle!” the sticky leader ordered, wiping mango pulp from his chin with a sigh of defeat.

They scrambled back down the trail, tripping over roots and clutching their gear, their boots splashing loudly in the mud until the sound of their retreat finally faded into the distance.

Goma stepped out from the shadows of the giant ferns, his chest still heaving slightly, though a rare, genuine smile crept across his leathery face. He walked over to the tree where I was dangling upside down by my feet, still wearing the blue baseball cap.

“You are a very strange creature, Mango,” the giant silverback rumbled, shaking his head. “But I suppose your foolishness saved us today.”

“I call it tactical genius,” I said, swinging upright and adjusting the cap so I could see him clearly. “And hey, look on the bright side. We got a souvenir.”

Goma let out a low, deep chuckle that resonated in my chest.

“Come on, little king of the canopy,” he said, turning back toward the safety of the deep forest. “Let’s go home before you decide to steal their boots next.”

I leaped down onto his broad, silver-furred shoulder, holding my new hat tightly. Together, we disappeared back into the endless green, leaving the chaotic world of the hairless ones far behind us. 🌳
