The Royal Rebellion of Enclosure Four

A Sovereign on a Blue Stool

The heavy hydraulic hiss of the emergency backup system failing sounded like a deflating tire, only far more dangerous. Marcus stood frozen in the keeper’s corridor. The mesh barrier was no longer a barrier. The sliding steel door that kept a very large, very stubborn gorilla in her designated playroom was wide open.

Penelope did not rush the opening. She was, after all, royalty.

She stood up from her bright blue plastic stool with deliberate, slow grace. The tiny silver tiara, adorned with plastic blue, red, and green gems, remained perfectly balanced on her head. She gripped her pink plastic plate in her left hand, using her right knuckles to take a slow, majestic step forward.

“Easy, girl,” Marcus muttered, his hands raised in a placid, non-threatening gesture. “We are all friends here. No need for a coup.”

Penelope stopped right at the threshold of the open doorway. She looked down at her pink plate, then up at Marcus, then back down at the plate. The message was clear. The queen was hungry, and the service in this establishment was severely lacking.

“Marcus!” Sarah’s voice came panting from the end of the hall. She slid around the corner, holding a golden box of crown-shaped shortbread cookies. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Penelope standing in the open doorway. “Oh. She’s out.”

“She is not out yet,” Marcus whispered, keeping his voice incredibly flat. “She is currently occupying the doorway. There is a diplomatic difference.”

“Do I give her the cookies?” Sarah whispered back, slowly raising the box.

“Yes. But do not throw them. She expects presentation.”

The Art of Gorilla Diplomacy

Sarah took a slow, deep breath. She had spent three years studying primate behavior, but nothing in her textbooks had prepared her for serving high tea to a silverback under the threat of a sanctuary-wide escape.

She opened the box of shortbread cookies. The rich scent of butter and sugar drifted through the sterile hallway. Penelope’s nostrils flared. She took a deep sniff, her dark eyes locking onto the golden box.

“Go ahead, Sarah,” Marcus urged softly. “Approach the throne.”

Sarah took three slow steps forward. She reached into the box and pulled out a perfectly baked, sugar-dusted shortbread cookie shaped like an imperial crown. With trembling fingers, she stretched her arm across the threshold.

Penelope watched the cookie approach. She did not reach out with her mouth. Instead, with extreme precision, she extended her massive, leathery hand and held the pink plastic plate directly under Sarah’s hand.

Drop.

The cookie landed right in the center of the pink circle. 👑

Penelope did not eat it immediately. She looked at the cookie, then looked at Sarah, then looked back into the box.

“She wants another one,” Sarah whispered.

“Of course she does,” Marcus said. “A queen doesn’t dine on single portions. Fill the plate, Sarah.”

One by one, Sarah placed four more cookies onto the pink plastic plate. Penelope watched the pile grow with quiet satisfaction. Once the fifth cookie was safely secured, she took a slow step backward, returning to her enclosure.

She sat back down on her blue stool. She carefully picked up a cookie with two massive fingers, took a delicate bite, and let out a soft, rumbling purr of pure contentment.

The Restoration of Order

With Penelope safely distracted by her royal feast, Marcus lunged forward and manually pulled the heavy sliding door shut. The metal latch clicked into place with a satisfying, secure thud. The lockdown was complete.

Marcus let out a breath he felt like he had been holding for ten years. He slumped against the concrete wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor.

“That,” Marcus breathed, “was entirely too close.”

Sarah leaned against the enclosure mesh, watching Penelope finish her second cookie. The gorilla’s tiara had tilted slightly to the left, giving her a wonderfully rakish, celebratory look.

“You have to admit,” Sarah smiled, tossing the empty cookie box to Marcus. “She looks absolutely magnificent.”

Penelope chewed her shortbread, looking out at her two keepers with supreme indifference. She tapped her pink plate once more against the blue stool, as if reminding them that afternoon tea would now be an everyday requirement.

“Tomorrow,” Marcus said, rubbing his temples, “we are buying her a matching plastic teapot.”
