Early in the morning, the entire unit gathered in the training field. The soldiers stood perfectly aligned under a scorching sun, as an absolute silence reigned over the grounds. Everyone sensed that something unusual was about to happen.
In the middle of the courtyard, only two people stood: the colonel and a young recruit named Ana. The girl had only been in the unit for a few days, having graduated with honors from the military academy. She was an exceptional shooter and never complained, no matter how harsh the conditions were.
However, on her second day, a heavy confrontation arose with the colonel. During a training session, a soldier suffered a serious fall after failing a jump and hitting his back violently against the ground. The colonel ordered the exercise to continue, saying coldly, “She will get up on her own.”
But Ana left the training and ran directly toward the injured soldier because he needed immediate medical attention. When the colonel shouted for her to return to her post immediately, Ana replied firm in front of dozens of soldiers, “First, we have to attend to him.”
For the colonel, that response was a public humiliation since no one had ever dared to challenge his authority in front of the entire unit. A few days later, he decided to give her a lesson. He ordered all the soldiers to gather again in the courtyard and called Ana to the front. The young woman moved calmly, her long black braid reaching almost to her waist—a braid everyone knew she cherished deeply.
Then the colonel pulled out a pair of large scissors while a nervous murmur ran through the rows. Ana remained motionless as the colonel held her braid and said firmly, “This is how you will learn not to defy those who are above you.” A moment later, the scissors closed their blades, and the heavy braid fell to the ground. A deep silence enveloped the entire courtyard.
The colonel looked at the young woman, waiting to see her cry, fall, or beg for forgiveness. But none of that happened. Ana didn’t even move, her face remaining completely impassive as she continued looking ahead. That unexpected calm enraged the colonel even more as he took a step towards her, mocking her lack of tears.
“Now, without that beautiful hair, you finally look like a real soldier and not a spoiled little girl,” he sneered, convinced he had broken her spirit. But the colonel was wrong. What Ana did immediately afterward left the entire company completely stunned.
