For years, we’ve had this little tradition of getting together for Sunday family dinners. Nothing fancy—just all of us around the table, catching up on life, eating too much, laughing, sometimes disagreeing like every family does. At least that’s what I wanted to believe.
Over the past year or so, though, I started noticing little things about the way my son-in-law, Greg, treated my daughter, Sally. It wasn’t anything dramatic AT FIRST. Just the occasional sarcastic comment, little digs disguised as jokes, the way he’d roll his eyes at her or correct her over the smallest things.
Every time I saw it, something in my stomach tightened. I mentioned it to my husband MORE than once, but he always said the same thing: “They’re married. We can’t interfere. They’ll work it out themselves.”
Part of me wanted to believe he was right. But another part of me kept thinking, What if this isn’t normal? What if she’s hurting more than she lets on?
Sally has been struggling ever since our granddaughter, Emmy, was born. Postpartum depression hit her hard, and like so many women, she GAINED weight afterward. She’s been trying so hard to feel like herself again, but lately she’s seemed… smaller somehow. Not physically—emotionally.
Quieter. Less confident. Like she’s constantly worried about saying or doing the wrong thing. As her mother, it’s been HEARTBREAKING to watch.
Yesterday, we all sat down for our usual Sunday dinner—Greg, Sally, little Emmy, my husband, and me. I had spent the afternoon baking Sally’s favorite chocolate fudge cake because I know how much SHE loves it.
Dinner was going well. Or at least I thought it was.
When I brought the cake to the table, Sally smiled, reached for the serving spatula to cut herself a slice. Then Greg suddenly reached across the table, SMACKED her hand away with a loud slap, and laughed.
“Whoa there, BUTTERBALL! You don’t need those empty calories. I’m just looking out for your health.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a room go silent that fast. Sally immediately froze. She quietly pulled her hands back into her lap like she’d done something wrong. My heart absolutely shattered.
NO WOMAN deserves to be humiliated by her own husband. I looked over at little Emmy, who was staring at her parents without understanding why Mommy suddenly looked so sad.
My husband clenched his jaw so hard I thought he was going to break a tooth. And Greg… Greg actually smiled. He looked around the table waiting for someone to laugh with him, completely convinced he’d just made some harmless joke.
In that moment, I realized this wasn’t a joke at all. This was simply how he treated my daughter. And judging by how quickly Sally shut down, it clearly wasn’t the first time.
He had absolutely no idea that his comfortable little world of casual cruelty was about to fall apart. I didn’t yell. I didn’t throw him out.
