PART 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
The grip on Barnaby’s ankle wasn’t the sharp, brutal claws of Samson or the cold fingers of Jax.
It was a soft, trembling hand belonging to little Maya, Chief Bruno’s youngest daughter. 🐵
She was clinging to the lower vine, her wide brown eyes filled with absolute terror.
She had been hiding behind the hollow trunk the entire time, witnessing every single moment of the betrayal.
Barnaby pulled her up onto his wide branch, wrapping his arm around her tiny shoulders to keep her quiet.
She was shaking so hard that the leaves around them rattled like falling rain.
“They’re going to hurt my father,” she whimpered, her voice barely a squeak.
Barnaby looked down at her small face, then back at his own resting place on the branch.
He knew that running straight to Chief Bruno right now would cause panic throughout the entire colony.
Bruno was proud and headstrong; if told about the rebellion without proof, he might challenge Samson immediately.
A direct physical fight between the aging Chief and the younger, stronger Samson would end in tragedy.
Barnaby needed a plan that didn’t rely on brute force, but on pure intelligence.
He sat back down on the sturdy wooden limb, leaning his head back against his hand just like before.
Maya stared at him in complete disbelief and confusion.
“Why are you going back to sleep?” she whispered urgently. “We have to run!”
Barnaby gently tapped his index finger against his temple, giving her a sly, knowing smile.
He wasn’t sleeping; he was calculating every variable like a master chess player.
Look closely at his posture up on that branch.
The way his brow rested lightly against his thick forearm wasn’t a sign of weariness.
It was the stance of a thinker, a strategist who used patience as his ultimate weapon.
His closed eyes allowed him to visualize the entire layout of the forest in crisp, vivid detail.
He mapped out the riverbank where the ambush was scheduled to take place at dawn.
He knew every slippery rock, every overhanging vine, and every hidden muddy trap along the water’s edge.
While Samson relied on raw muscle and Jax relied on cruelty, Barnaby relied on the quiet wisdom of observation.
He had spent years watching the senior members of the troop interact from high up in the trees.
He knew Samson was terrified of driver ants, the fierce stinging insects that swarmed near the muddy banks.
He knew Koko had terrible night vision and couldn’t fight in the dim light of early morning fog.
And he knew Jax was a coward who would run the moment the odds were no longer in his favor.
Barnaby leaned over and whispered his master plan into Maya’s ear.
Her terrified eyes gradually widened with excitement and wonder as she listened to his brilliant idea.
“Can we really pull this off?” she asked, a small smile finally breaking through her fear.
“We don’t have a choice,” Barnaby murmured, settling back into his serene posture.
For the rest of the afternoon, Barnaby remained on his branch, looking like the picture of absolute tranquility.
To the rest of the jungle, he was just a lazy ape wasting the day away in peaceful isolation. 🌿
His sleek black fur caught the dappled sunlight filtering through the vibrant green leaves.
His feet remained loosely tucked beneath his belly, relaxed and steady on the rough lichen.
His subtle smirk remained fixed on his dark, expressive face.
It was the smile of someone who knew a secret that could tilt the balance of power forever.
When night fell over the mountain canopy, the forest transformed into a world of shadows and echoes.
While the rest of the troop slept in their cozy treetop nests, Barnaby and Maya quietly got to work.
They traveled silently through the upper branches, avoiding the lower ground where Samson’s scouts patrolled.
Barnaby guided Maya to the sharp river bend where Chief Bruno always took his morning drink.
Working in complete darkness, Barnaby used long sticks to disturb a massive nest of driver ants near the trail.
He carefully guided the angry swarm toward the thick bushes where Samson and Koko planned to hide.
Then, he bent several supple bamboo stalks across the narrow path, securing them with tough jungle vines to create natural spring traps.
By the time the first faint purple light of dawn touched the horizon, everything was perfectly set.
Barnaby climbed to a high branch overlooking the riverbank and resumed his signature posture.
He folded his arm, rested his head against his cheek, and closed his eyes with that same peaceful smile.
Right on schedule, Chief Bruno walked slowly down the path toward the sparkling water.
A few moments later, the shadows behind the thick bushes began to move.
Samson, Koko, and Jax crept forward, their eyes locked on the unsuspecting old chief.
Samson stepped right into the dense bushes to launch his surprise attack—and immediately screamed in agony! 😱
Thousands of furious driver ants swarmed up his legs, biting him with relentless ferocity.
Samson thrashing around in pain accidentally tripped the vine mechanism Barnaby had set up.
A massive bamboo stalk snapped backward with a thunderous crack, striking Koko squarely in the chest.
Koko tumbled backward into the freezing, fast-moving river with a loud splash!
Jax took one look at the utter chaos, panicked, and tried to sprint back into the safety of the jungle.
