Part 2 But in the blink of an eye, everything changed! The world didn’t explode. There was no attack. ‘The General’ simply and slightly relaxed his posture. The authoritative, outstretched hand lower slightly, beckoning.
‘You’re the one,’ his eyes shifted from test to trust. 😯 He looked past me, signaling to something or someone hidden. I slowly turned my head, holding my breath. From the dense undergrowth, another small chimp emerged. 🐒 It wasn’t just any chimp; its tiny hand clutched something. It was a small, crudely made mirror, reflecting the sky. The glint I’d seen wasn’t gold; it was sunlight on glass.
My own reflected face stared back from the small chimp’s possession.
‘Where did you get that?’ I asked, my voice barely a whisper. The younger chimp offered the mirror to ‘The General.’ He carefully examined it, holding it up with great reverence. ‘The hand’ that commanded me was now a hand of curiosity.
His expression shifted from generalship to profound wonder. 🤔 He was analyzing me through my own reflection. ‘We find things,’ his intelligent gaze seemed to explain. ‘Things your world leaves behind. Things that change us.’ My heart was now racing for an entirely different reason. They weren’t just observing us; they were using our tools. Our reflections, our small bits of garbage, were knowledge to them.
The smaller chimp was trying to imitate the General’s gaze. It held its hand up similarly, looking for its own authority.
The General gently corrected its form with the mirror. ‘Not for commanding,’ his movement suggested, ‘For understanding.’
