The Echo of Innocence
Part Two of the Story… 👇
Unforgivable Truth
The grand double doors of the sanctuary opened, but it was not the bride making her entrance. A heavy hush fell over the three hundred distinguished guests as a frail woman stepped into the aisle, her presence striking a jarring discord against the opulent surroundings. Her clothes were worn and faded, a stark contrast to the designer gowns and tailored suits filling the pews. She walked with a noticeable limp, her posture weak, yet her dark eyes were fixed with unwavering intensity on the altar where Henry Sterling stood.
Henry froze, the breath catching in his throat as his eyes met hers. Ten years of calculated indifference, ten years of carefully constructed hatred, shattered in a single second. It was Maya. The girl he had loved with an intensity that had terrified him, the girl he had cast out into the cold a decade ago after a trail of fabricated evidence convinced him she had sold his family’s proprietary research to their bitterest rival. He had declared her dead to him, burying her memory beneath years of ruthless corporate ambition and, ultimately, this marriage of convenience to Lara Montgomery.
A murmur rippled through the congregation. Lara’s face turned pale beneath her immaculate makeup, her gloved fingers tightening around her bouquet until the stems crushed. Beside her, Sonia’s hand flew to her throat, her eyes widening in sheer panic.
Maya reached the edge of the altar, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She did not say a word. She reached into the pocket of her frayed coat and pulled out a simple silver USB drive attached to a faded blue lanyard—the very same lanyard Henry had given her during their second year at university. She held it out to him, her hand trembling violently. Henry stepped forward automatically, as if pulled by an invisible thread, and accepted the cold metal drive.
Before he could speak her name, Maya’s knees gave out. She collapsed onto the polished marble floor, unconscious.
Panic erupted across the room. Henry immediately dropped to his knees, lifting her frail head. Her skin was burning with fever, her wrists thin enough to snap. “Call an ambulance!” Henry bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with an authority that left no room for debate. Within moments, security staff rushed forward, assisting the estate’s medical team as they lifted Maya onto a stretcher and hurried her out to an awaiting vehicle.
Henry stood up, his white tuxedo jacket stained with faint dust from the floor, his mind spinning into absolute chaos. He looked at the silver drive in his palm. The Valen Estate’s grand ballroom featured a massive LED display screen behind the altar, meant to showcase a romantic slideshow of Henry and Lara’s journey together later in the evening. Acting on pure, volatile instinct, Henry walked past his stunned groomsmen toward the media booth at the side of the altar.
“Henry, what are you doing?” Lara shouted, her voice shrill as she rushed down the steps, her heavy silk train rustling furiously. “She is a nobody! A crazy trespasser trying to ruin our day! Security should have thrown her out! Leave it, Henry, please!”
Henry ignored her completely. He plugged the USB drive into the main console. The technician at the soundboard backed away, terrified by the deadly look in the groom’s eyes.
A soft hum filled the room, and the giant display screen flickered, transitioning from a high-resolution photo of Henry and Lara to a stark file directory containing audio files, bank transfers, and scanned documents dated precisely ten years ago. Henry pressed play on the first audio file.
The high-definition speakers surrounding the grand hall vibrated as Sonia Montgomery’s voice filled the room, crystal clear and undeniable.
“Are the offshore accounts set up?” Sonia’s recorded voice asked.
A man’s voice answered, “Yes, Mrs. Montgomery. Once we route the stolen Sterling Tech files through Maya’s university IP address, Henry will think she took the five million dollar payout from the competition. He will never suspect you paid us to set her up.”
“Good,” Sonia replied with a chilling laugh that echoed throughout the sanctuary. “My daughter deserves the Sterling fortune, not some penniless scholarship girl. Ensure Maya’s reputation is destroyed so thoroughly that she can never step foot in this city again.”
Gasps of horror erupted from the crowd. Several high-profile investors and public figures stood up in shock, staring at the Montgomery family with utter disgust.
Lara screamed, lunging toward the media booth to yank the drive out, but Henry blocked her path, his frame rigid, his eyes burning with an icy, unforgiving wrath. He clicked on the next document. It was a certified medical report from a charity clinic three towns away, detailing years of chronic illness Maya had suffered while working three jobs just to survive, alongside court filings showing how Sonia had used her political influence to blackball Maya from every employment opportunity she ever sought.
