Part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
Bertha didn’t flinch, shout, or slap his hand away. ⚡
Instead, her dark, heavy eyelids snapped open with the intensity of a thunderstorm.
Her deep brown eyes locked straight onto Barnaby’s tiny, guilty face.
She didn’t pull the banana back.
She didn’t move a single muscle in her giant body.
She just stared at him with the calm, terrifying power that only a mother possesses. 👁️👁️
Barnaby froze instantly in place like a statue carved out of dark stone.
His tiny hand remained stuck to the banana peel, completely paralyzed.
His sly smirk melted away into a look of pure, unadulterated shock.
The silence between them grew so heavy you could hear a feather drop onto the soft grass.
Bertha slowly lowered her hand, bringing both the banana and Barnaby’s trapped fingers down to her chest.
She didn’t say a word, because she didn’t have to.
Her heavy, deliberate breathing said everything that needed to be said.
Barnaby looked up into her face, his big round eyes suddenly overflowing with fake innocence.
He quickly released his grip on the banana like it was made of scalding hot coal.
He took the limp green leaves he was holding and gently offered them up to her instead. 🌿
It was the classic toddler defense strategy: pretend it was all a big misunderstanding.
He let out a tiny, soft whimpering noise, trying to play the helpless victim card.
He batted his eyelids and snuggled his small head deeper into her arm.
He hoped that his immense cuteness would wipe out the memory of his blatant crime.
For five agonizing seconds, Bertha held her terrifying, unblinking glare.
The tension in the clearing was thick enough to cut with a sharp blade.
Then, the corners of her massive mouth twitched.
A tiny, subtle puff of air escaped her nose.
She wasn’t angry at all; she was amused.
She had seen his sly little look in the reflection of her own thoughts long before he even reached up.
She knew his sneaky tricks better than he knew them himself.
After all, she had raised three other mischievous infants before Barnaby came along.
She knew every single game, every sneaky glance, and every secret plan in the book.
Slowly, deliberately, Bertha split the banana right down the middle with her thumb. 🍌
She took the smaller half and placed it gently into Barnaby’s waiting palm.
She kept the larger half for herself, taking a big, slow, satisfying bite.
Barnaby looked down at the soft yellow piece of fruit sitting safely in his hand.
He couldn’t believe his incredible luck.
He hadn’t successfully stolen it, but he had received the prize nonetheless.
He stuffed the whole piece into his mouth at once, his cheeks bulging like a squirrel storing nuts.
A look of absolute bliss washed over his small, dark face.
Bertha wrapped her massive, protective arm tighter around his back, pulling him close to her warm heart.
She rested her heavy chin gently on top of his furry head while they both chewed happily in the sun.
The intense standoff had dissolved into a moment of pure, beautiful harmony.
