Part 2: The Audit of Souls

Arthur stood with his back to the door, his posture still impossibly dignified despite the heart failure that was slowly killing him. He looked at me, not with the coldness of a tyrant, but with the weary clarity of a man who had seen everything.

“You think this was a business transaction, Sarah,” he began, walking slowly to a massive oak desk. “And you’re right, in part. But you only read the fine print about the surgery.”

He slid a heavy, dark blue legal folder across the table toward me. “The doctors already have their money, and Noah is scheduled for next week. You can stop holding your breath. I don’t lie to my wife.”

My hands trembled as I sat in the plush velvet chair. I looked at the folder. “Then… what did I sign?”

“My daughter, Victoria, wants to liquidate my art collection. My son, David, wants to dissolve my grandmother’s foundation and develop the land into luxury condos,” Arthur explained, sitting opposite me, the firelight reflecting in his sharp, tired eyes. “They are greedy, short-sighted, and they don’t value the family’s legacy.”

“I signed as your power of attorney,” I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. “While your children fought over what they could grab when you died…”

“I needed someone to grab everything before I died, to hold it for someone worthy,” Arthur interrupted, reaching forward and placing his hand over mine. “I spent months watching you, Sarah. You worked until your hands bled. You skipped meals for that boy. You sold everything you owned without a single complaint. You know the true value of money.”

He gestured toward a hidden safe behind the desk, which was slightly ajar.

“That folder contains the deeds to every historical property, the charters for every foundation, and the sole voting rights for the entire family trust,” Arthur explained cleanly. “They are in your name, Sarah. The moment we said ‘I do,’ I didn’t just give you my hand; I handed you my entire empire.”

I collapsed back into the chair, my head spinning. I had entered the mansion thinking I was a desperate woman selling her freedom for a single medical procedure, and I had just walked out as the most powerful woman in the city.

“Why?” I asked, a ragged sob escaping my chest. “Why me?”

“Because,” Arthur smiled, a genuine warmth finally breaking across his face. “If I had left it to my children, they would have built monuments to their own vanity. But by leaving it to a woman who understands sacrifice, I knew you would build a future that my family could finally be proud of.”
