Part 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

Barnaby did not panic, run away, or drop the sweet watermelon onto the hard concrete floor.

Instead, he relied on the one thing that had kept him safe his whole life: his incredible ability to pose like a statue.

He pulled his limbs in tight, pressed his back against the white wall right beside the refrigerator, and froze completely solid.

Because his fur was as white as snow, he blended seamlessly into the painted brick background of the kitchen.

The night guard, an elderly man named Arthur who had worked at the sanctuary for thirty years, stepped into the room.

Arthur rubbed his tired eyes, swinging his yellow flashlight across the counters and table surfaces.

“Who left the kitchen fridge wide open again?” Arthur muttered to himself, shaking his head in annoyance.

“Those young interns are going to ruin hundreds of dollars worth of fruit if they keep forgetting the doors.”

Arthur walked directly past Barnaby, his sleeve almost brushing against the thick white fur on Barnaby’s shoulder.

Barnaby held his breath completely, not moving a single muscle or blinking his pale eyes.

He stood so still that he looked like a giant plush doll or a decorative marble sculpture placed in the corner of the staff lounge.

Arthur reached out, grabbed the double doors of the refrigerator, and slammed them shut with a heavy thump.

“Always leaving things messy,” Arthur grumbled, shining his light toward the far exit as he turned around.

He walked right past Barnaby a second time, completely unaware that a two-hundred-pound white ape was standing three inches away from him.

Arthur stepped back out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him with a sharp click.

Barnaby let out a massive breath of air, his chest heaving up and down in pure relief. 😮‍💨

He knew he couldn’t stay in the kitchen forever, but he also refused to leave empty-handed after coming this far.

Moving with incredible speed, he reopened the fridge, scooped up the giant watermelon, three ripe papayas, and a massive cluster of sweet bananas.

Holding the mountain of delicious fruit against his chest with one arm, he used his free hand to slip back into the dark corridor.

He navigated the quiet hallways like a phantom, avoiding the security cameras he had spent years observing from his outdoor yard.
