Part 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

The low rumble in his chest wasn’t a threat directed at Clara. 🐅

It was a warning to something lurking in the high grass behind her.

Before she could even turn her head, a massive rogue poacher’s trap dropped from the branch above, swinging wildly toward her back.

In a display of lightning-fast speed that defied his massive size, the silverback threw his arm out.

He didn’t use his force to harm; he used his body as a shield.

His heavy arm intercepted the heavy iron cable, taking the blow so Clara wouldn’t be touched.

The sharp metallic clatter echoed through the peaceful forest clearing.

The force of the impact shook the ground beneath them.

Yet through it all, his other hand remained completely steady.

The tiny, fragile blossom was still tucked safely in his huge palm, untouched and uncrushed. 🌸

Clara gasped, tumbling backward into the dry leaves.

Her heart pounded so violently she could hear it ringing in her ears.

She looked up, terror gripping her chest, expecting chaos and rage to erupt.

Instead, the silverback simply turned his head and gave the tangled steel cable a dismissive swat, flinging it harmlessly into the thick underbrush.

He didn’t roar.

He didn’t beat his chest.

He turned back to Clara, settling his heavy frame back down into the dirt.

He lowered his shoulder, leaned in once more, and extended his hand toward her nose again.

It was as if the life-threatening danger had been nothing more than an annoying fly.

His focus returned entirely to her.

Clara sat in the dirt, her hands shaking uncontrollably, staring at the majestic creature before her.

She realized then what had really just happened.

He hadn’t brought her the flower just to show off or play.

He had brought her to this specific spot to keep her safe while he cleared the dangerous snare line that had been illegally set in his territory.

He knew the forest was unsafe for her today.

He had used the bloom to draw her close, keeping her grounded and still right beside him where he could protect her.

Tears spilled over Clara’s eyelashes, tracking down her dust-stained cheeks. 🥺

She looked at his face, really taking in every detail of this incredible soul.

The fine silver hairs on his crest caught the late afternoon sun, glowing like a crown of light.

The weathered, intricate wrinkles around his dark eyes told a story of decades surviving in a harsh, beautiful wilderness.

His broad, leathery nostrils flared gently as he took in her scent, checking to ensure she wasn’t injured.
