PART 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
A sudden, sharp metallic crash echoed from the back hallway behind the sanctuary enclosure!
A heavy metal tray had slipped off a shelf in the kitchen and smashed noisily against the tile floor.
The loud noise shattered the peaceful silence inside the room like a hammer hitting glass.
The tiny grey kitten panicked instantly.
Its fur puffed up like a tiny dandelion clock, and its tiny claws dug into the mat in sheer terror.
The kitten scrambled backward, slipping off the edge of the mat and letting out a sharp, distressed screech.
In the observation room, Marcus felt his heart drop right back into his stomach.
A sudden, sharp noise was the ultimate trigger for a large primate’s defensive instincts.
If Samson was startled into a fight-or-flight response, his raw power could instantly unleash chaos.
Marcus raised the rifle again, his hands shaking violently as he pressed his eye against the scope.
“Samson, easy boy!” Marcus yelled through the internal intercom, his voice cracking with emotion.
Inside the enclosure, Samson reacted to the loud bang instantly.
His massive shoulders surged upward, his dark fur bristling along his back as his head whipped around.
His nostrils flared as he scanned the room for an immediate physical threat.
For a terrifying second, the gentle playmate vanished, replaced by the terrifying aura of a apex wild creature.
The tiny grey kitten tumbled helplessly into the folds of the orange blanket, squeaking in utter distress.
It scrambled directly toward Samson’s massive foot, seeking cover from the terrifying noise.
The caretakers held their breath, fearing the gorilla would step down or swipe outward in a reflex reaction.
Instead of lashing out at the noise, Samson immediately looked down at his feet.
He saw the tiny grey kitten trembling against his dark ankle, shivering with pure fear.
The giant ape’s entire posture shifted in less than a microsecond.
His broad shoulders lowered.
His tense jaw muscles instantly relaxed.
The instinctive defensive urge vanished entirely, replaced by a deep, maternal protectiveness.
Samson didn’t jump up to roar or chest-beat.
He slowly wrapped his giant, leathery left arm around the perimeter of the orange blanket.
He created a soft, furry wall of protection between the kitten and the rest of the room.
Then, with unbelievable care, Samson lowered his right hand back down toward the purple stick.
He picked up the colorful ribbon toy once again.
He held the plastic handle delicately between his thumb and finger, just as he had done before.
Slowly, gently, he nudged the colorful toy back toward the shivering kitten.
