Part 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

Just as Chief Miller reached into his belt pocket for his whistle, a high-pitched screech echoed from the top of the palm tree directly above Bruno’s head. 🌴

It wasn’t a zookeeper, and it wasn’t a security guard arriving with reinforcements.

It was Barnaby, the enclosure’s resident mischievous capuchin monkey, who had been watching the entire high-stakes heist from the upper branches.

Barnaby had been eyeing those bright orange roots since the very moment Bruno brought them into the clearing.

Before anyone could react or shout a warning, Barnaby dropped straight down from the palm leaves, landing square on Bruno’s massive furry shoulder.

The sudden weight made Bruno jump in surprise, causing his massive jaw to shift violently.

The three carrots stuffed sideways into his mouth suddenly snapped in half with a sound like loud firecrackers.

Small orange pieces flew through the air, scattering across the green grass like colorful confetti.

Miller froze in his tracks, holding his hands up in absolute shock as he watched the chaotic scene unfold before him.

Bruno blinked his dark, heavy-browed eyes, his mind momentarily thrown off by the tiny intruder sitting on his shoulder.

His intense, serious glare melted for a microsecond into pure, hilarious confusion.

Barnaby didn’t waste a single millisecond of the distraction.

The tiny monkey reached down with his lightning-fast paws and snatched the leafy green tops right out of Bruno’s left hand.

He attempted to sprint back toward the safety of the stone wall and the high tree branches.

But Bruno was far too quick for a thief operating in his own territory.

With incredible speed for a creature of his size, Bruno swung his heavy right arm, the one still clutching two thick carrots like iron batons, blocking Barnaby’s path.

The monkey let out a dramatic squeak of terror, dropped the leafy tops onto the dirt, and scrambled up the nearest rock face to safety.

Bruno lowered his arm back down, breathing heavily, his broad chest rising and falling like a bellow.

He looked down at his lap, evaluating the remaining treasure scattered around his folded legs.

The leafy green tops were slightly crushed, dirt was smeared across his grey-furred chest, but his core stash was still firmly in his possession.

Miller saw his moment of opportunity and stepped forward cautiously, pulling a large catch-net out from the back of the golf cart.

“Alright Bruno, game over,” Miller shouted, trying to sound authoritative despite his shaking voice. “Surrender the veggies!”

Bruno looked at Miller, then looked down at his left hand, which was still holding four whole carrots and a thick bundle of foliage.
