Part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
Barnaby froze as the soft rustling behind his back suddenly turned into a distinct, sharp scratching sound. 👂
Slowly, without lifting his hand from his aching forehead, he shifted his dark eyes toward the dark crevice beneath the stone.
Out from the small shadow emerged Barnaby’s long-time neighbor, a tiny grey field mouse named Barnaby Junior.
Barnaby Junior was no larger than a walnut, but he possessed the bold confidence of a lion standing on a mountain peak.
The tiny mouse scurried right up Barnaby’s hairy leg, scampered along his forearm, and perched directly on his wrist. 🐭
Barnaby didn’t move an inch, keeping his facepalm pose completely intact so as not to startle the little creature.
Barnaby Junior looked straight into the big gorilla’s mournful eyes and let out a series of tiny squeaks.
It was almost as if the mouse was asking why the big king of the enclosure was sitting in such utter misery.
Barnaby let out a long, heavy sigh that made the grass around his feet flutter like autumn leaves. 🍃
He gently tapped his finger toward the deep tree stump across the yard, then pointed toward his stomach.
To anyone watching from the outside, it was just a gorilla sitting motionless while a mouse ran across his arm.
But between the giant silverback and the tiny field mouse, a unspoken language of desperation was taking place.
Barnaby Junior twitched his pink nose, turned his head toward the distant tree stump, and seemed to understand instantly.
With a lightning-fast dash, the little mouse leaped off Barnaby’s wrist and darted across the open dirt floor. 🏃♂️
He zigzagged through the patch of boring celery stalks and disappeared right into the dark crack of the old wooden stump.
Barnaby held his breath, leaning back against the rough grey rock wall while keeping his hand glued to his brow.
The crowd of human visitors outside the enclosure glass began to murmur with curiosity.
They wondered why the big gorilla had suddenly gone completely rigid, staring intently at an old dead stump.
Seconds felt like long, grueling hours as Barnaby waited for any sign of movement from the hollow wood. 🪵
Suddenly, a tiny grey nose popped out from the deep crack in the stump, followed by two bright black eyes.
In his tiny sharp teeth, Barnaby Junior was firmly clamping the shiny brass pantry key by its round metal top.
The mouse had successfully wriggled down into the tight crevice where Barnaby’s giant fingers could never fit.
Barnaby’s eyes widened with pure shock and joy, though he kept his body hunched over so the keepers wouldn’t notice.
The brave little mouse sprinted across the grassy field, carrying the heavy metallic key with all his tiny strength. 🔑
He reached the base of the boulder and carefully placed the brass key right between Barnaby’s toes.
Barnaby looked down at the tiny key, then back at the mouse, who gave a quick nod before vanishing into the shadows.
