Part 2: The Ghost of the Sanctuary

The Weight of a Legacy

The dust hung in the air like a heavy golden shroud, catching the harsh sunbeams filtering through the shattered roof. Barnaby’s breathing was a ragged, wet sound that tore at Sarah’s heart. Every muscle in his massive arms vibrated with catastrophic strain.

The three-ton concrete beam groaned, settling its immense weight directly onto the rubber tire he held and the thick curve of his spine. Underneath him, safely tucked into the hollow of his giant lap, the tiny chimpanzee infant whimpered, its small fingers clutching desperately at Barnaby’s pale fur.

“Aris, hold his side!” Sarah commanded, her voice dropping all panic, entering the cold zone of absolute focus. “We need to brace the tire. If that rubber pops or slips, the angle shifts and it crushes the baby.”

Dr. Aris scrambled through the rubble, his hands scraping against sharp stone as he wedged a thick wooden timber under the lip of the tire.

“It’s not going to hold, Sarah,” Aris gasped, his face pale. “The structural integrity of this entire wall is gone. Barnaby is the only thing keeping this section from pancaking.”

Barnaby let out a soft huff, a contrast to his earlier terrifying roar. He turned his heavy head toward Sarah. There was no wild panic in his gaze. Instead, it was the calm, settled resolve of an elder who had made his choice. He had lived a long life surrounded by glass and brick, watched by thousands who marveled at his unique white coat. But right now, he wasn’t an exhibit. He was a savior.

A desperate Alliance

“We need the hydraulic jack from the truck,” Sarah said, her voice steady but fast. “I’ll stay here. I’ll keep him calm.”

“Sarah, if the wall goes, you’re dead too,” Aris warned, his eyes darting to the ceiling.

“Go, Aris! Now!……”
